Hope your birthday is grand! :cake::iconballoonrideplz::iconisayplz:
Cool engravings! I was wondering if you could explain your process a little bit; do you prepare your wood any particular way? How many reapplications of wine does it take to get a decent stain? And do you use any type of finish, oil, resin? I look forward to seeing more of your work!
thanks! i don't prepare the wood at all, i just apply the wine directly. in one piece i cut away a trench for the wine, but that bled out pretty quickly. one or two applications will slightly darken the wood, but it takes many, many layers to get a distinctly red color. even then, it tends to fade to more of a pink or brown, depending on the wood. i'm beginning to experiment with oils to treat the wood, but haven't used it in a complete project yet--it works fine with the wine, but tends to mess up the ink, oddly.
:iconrikalikeswineplz: I might be inclined not to share my wine with my work. You are very disciplined! :D

I would guess that it's the light-fastness of the wine that's at issue with the fading. I wonder whether there are any UV protecting resins available?
